Boat of Garten Golf and Tennis Club
Designed by one of the grand-masters of golf course architecture, James Braid, 'The Boat' is set alongside the River Spey in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park. The course is not only renowned as a demanding test of sporting skill but also as a magnificent setting for the game. Braid’s design features 18 completely individual holes cleverly and sensitively routed holes cut through a birch forest, and maximises the natural landscape producing a beautiful and challenging course.
Although difficult to choose form several great holes, the 6th (The Avenue) is often regarded as the course's 'signature' hole. The narrow tree-lined fairway doglegs to the right and a good drive leaves a mid-iron approach shot to the plateau green, which is guarded by bunkers to the left and right. As on every hole at Boat of Garten, accuracy is rewarded but beware the wayward driver!
The Boat regularly features in listings of the best courses in Scotland and recently was voted 'Scotland's No1 Hidden Gem' by readers of Bunkered magazine. popular with visitors from both home and abroad, the course has become firmly established as a 'must' for golfers, when visiting the Highlands.
The view from the Clubhouse, over the 1st and 2nd fairways and beyond to the uniquely attractive surroundings of the Cairngorm mountains - with such distinctive features as the Lairig Ghru and the northern corries of Braeriach - is incomparable, certainly within the realms of British golf.
Dubbed 'the Gleneagles of the North', this Highland grandeur can bring the best out of any the golfer, perhaps an understanding of Braid's design genius or more commonly, simply an acknowledgement that the course has proved a very demanding test.
The Club's PGA Professional, Ross Harrower, not only provides a well-stocked shop offering golf equipment and clothing but also club repairs, club hire, tuition and advice. The Clubhouse, with its stunning views from the comfortable sun-lounge and bar, offers a warm and friendly welcome and a high standard of catering to the visitor. Two recently-refurbished and well-maintained tennis courts are available for those members and visitors looking for an alternative to golf and, in the immediate area, is the RSPB osprey hide at Loch Garten and the Strathspey Steam Railway (the station is a short walk - or a driver and a wedge - from the Clubhouse).
