Shinty in Aviemore and Cairngorms area
Shinty!......The Sport of the Gael
Scotland's national indigenous game of Shinty (Camanachd) is one of the world's oldest team sports with roots rating back some 2,000 years - both golf and ice hockey are direct descendants. This stick-and-ball sport is fast, exciting and requires great stamina, skill, courage and tactical thinking. The modern game was born in Badenoch and, although it is still played throughout most of Scotland, its two greatest exponents are Kingussie and Newtonmore Camanachd Clubs. Indeed, a visit to this area without taking in a game of Shinty has been likened to fishing on the Spey and ignoring the salmon. (The after-match socialising should not be missed either!)
